Client: Portland Public Schools and the City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services
Project: Glencoe Elementary School Rain Garden Portland, OR

Marianne Zarkin provided pro bono services for site planning and design, vegetated stormwater facility design, and construction oversight for the creation of this 5,000 square foot outdoor classroom and butterfly garden at this southeast Portland elementary school. Working with students, teachers, administrators, and parents, she created a plan for the garden and oversaw the construction by school volunteers. The innovative bioswale and stormwater system utilizes native soil and plants to capture runoff, retain and absorb excess water, and prevent it from entering the sewer, contributing to backup in the adjacent neighborhood.
